I am looking for someone who is enterprising--comes to work everyday prepared with hard news enterprise story ideas.  The ability to generate differentiated hard news content is a must.  Another must is the person must be strong live and likes covering breaking news--which is our #1 priority.  The person also has to play well with others in the sandbox--we do a lot of team reporting on big stories so everyone has to know they are a part of a team.  We also like people who are good citizens in and out of the newsroom.  Their references have to check out.

I am not looking for an anchor.

As for experience, I have hired people with as little as five years and as much as 20 years.  They just have to be good.

Finally, they have to want to be here.  If we wind up bringing someone in, we expect them to do their homework about the market and us before they come to town.

CBS Network Radio, Desk Assistants, New York, NY.
Posted 8/24/05                                                                      ENTRY LEVEL POSITIONS

CBS radio is looking to hire a couple of full-time desk assistants. This is at the network in New York. The D-A is the first point of contact for people calling the network offering to file stories. You get to talk to everyone -- from affiliates and o&o’s wanting two ways with the radio network correspondents to newsmakers and TV people. If you spend your time wisely you’ll be on a first name basis with dozens of potential employers by the time you’re ready to move on. It’s not unusual for radio D-A’s to end up at CBS Television. In fact that’s why one of these jobs is open now.

Reality check: You will work bad hours, holidays and weekends, but having “CBS Radio Network” on your resume is a good thing. It’s all part of paying your dues.

Let me know if you’re interested.
