Every person 14 years of age or older must
abstain from meat
(and items made with meat) on Ash Wednesday,
Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.
Every person between the age of 18 and 59
(beginning of 60th year) must fast on
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter
in the Christian calendar. Beginning on
Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before
the celebrations of Easter.
By observing the 40 days of Lent,
Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice
and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.
"Jesus took Peter, James, and John
and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them,
and his clothes became dazzling white,
such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.
Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over
from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."
"Many of the Samaritans of that town
began to believe in him
because of the word of the woman who testified,
"He told me everything I have done." When the Samaritans
came to him, they invited him to stay with them;
and he stayed there two days.
Many more began to believe in him because of his word,
and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your word;
for we have heard for ourselves,
and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."
"As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his
parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered,
"Neither he nor his parents sinned;
it is so that the works of God might be made visible
... Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this
and said to him, "Surely we are not also blind, are we?"
Jesus said to them, "If you were born blind, you would have no sin;
but now you are saying, 'We see,' so your sin remains."
"Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister
Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here,
my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God,
God will give you." Jesus said to her,
"Your brother will rise." Martha said to him,
"I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day."
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die."
Jesus' triumphant entry in
Jerusalem ends with His
painful death on the cross.
